HISTORY
For over 60 years, the City of Galt, now Cambridge, has been the home of Reid Candy and Nut Shop. It was a delightful little shop that roasted nuts and sold some candy.
In 1971, Tom and Kathy Drew-Smith took over ownership from Hugh and Isabelle Reid. By 1978 the aroma of chocolate and candy making filled the air much to the delight and pleasure of passersby.
Tom and Kathy began to experiment and expand the assorted chocolates selection, they added peanut brittle, fudge and Turkish delight. Unique to their shop they continued to freshly roast nuts right on the premises. Business increased to the point where more space was required. So in July 1981, the store and manufacturing equipment were moved to 42 Ainslie St. N, across from the Galt Farmer's Market. The young entrepreneurial couple continued to sample the worlds confections, experimenting, and refining recipes to provide an ever larger selection of tempting treats.
HISTORY
Tom and Kathy in addition to delivering chocolates delivered two other additions to the store. Growing up surrounded by candy it was only a matter of time until their son Ted mastered the candyman's stir and took over managing daily production. Starting in 2002, he is now the resident "mad chocolatier" sampling flavor combinations adding to the stores portfolio of chocolaty concoctions! Carrie took longer to succumb to the will of the chocolate. Her education lead her astray working within one of Canada's largest retail corporations. Inevitably "as a retailer is - a retailer does" her thoughts couldn't help but find their way back to the family store. Carrie now adds her creative touch to the store and packing. It is important to her that the boxes of chocolates and the store look as good as they taste.
Tom and Kathy, Ted and Carrie are the current generations maintaining stewardship to the boutique chocolate, nut and candy factory. Generations of parents, children, grandparents and lovers young and old, share in the factories chocolaty treats celebrating any of life's many occasions.
